Dates follow the mainstream consensus of Viking Age historiography (the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, the Russian Primary Chronicle, the Vinland sagas, and Ibn Fadlan's travel account). A few — Iceland in 874, Rurik at Novgorod in 862 — are the traditional dates given by later chronicles rather than independently verified events, and are noted as such above.
